cancelOrder function doesn't work

When I try to cancel an active open order using the cancelOrder() function, I get this error

c.angelbroking.smartapi.SmartConnect - JSONObject["data"] is not a JSONObject (class org.json.JSONObject$Null : null).

What could be the reason for the same?
